The Quantum short-sleeved shirt and Phenom shorts are like nothing MEC has made before. – Review by MEC Envoy Jasper Blake
I got a package in the mail, opened it up, and thought it was odd that a running shoe company would send me some of their apparel to try. Then I realized it had MEC logos on it. This surprised me because the shirt and shorts looked so different than what MEC had in its running line-up before.
As luck would have it, I had a run on the schedule that day. I wore the gear at home for a bit (the most comfortable outfit I’ve ever worn around the house), and headed out to the trails by Royal Roads University on a hot, dry day in Victoria. This is one of my favorite places to run because it leads to some spectacular waterfront access where you can veer out of the trails and get some relief from the ocean breeze.
MEC Quantum Running Shirt
The fabric for the Quantum shirt is light, breathable and loose without being baggy or sloppy. It’s also perforated, which adds an exceptional amount of breathability. The cut is functional without being tight and restrictive. As I ran, it moved in sync with my body and the wicking properties drew away sweat when I started to really give’r. It’s the perfect warm or hot weather top because it offers a layer of protection from the sun but is incredibly cool and light – it feels as though you’re wearing nothing on top.

MEC Phenom Running Shorts
The Phenom shorts are equally as pleasing to the nerdy runner in me. Like the shirt, they provide a loose fit without being baggy or sloppy, and they’re cut to allow for a completely free leg swing during your stride. They have enough length that you won’t feel like you’re suiting up for a run in old school 60s gear.
Perhaps the most innovative feature of the shorts are the pockets. Most running shorts have some kind a pocket to carry keys or some ID, and most of those pockets are on the back of the shorts. I dislike back pockets because the tiny zipper digs into me when I do core work after my run. The Phenom shorts, however, have the pocket on the side, and it’s easily big enough for a car key as well as ID or cash. To top it off, they also have a smaller inside front pocket in case you find a little seashell or rock on your running adventure that you must bring home to show your loved ones.

Both the shorts and shirt have reflective strips in case your long run goes a little bit too long and you find yourself running home in the dark. Safety is key when you’re running, and it’s vitally important that cars can see you so the drivers will be inspired to go for a run as well.
Overall, the Quantum short-sleeved shirt and Phenom shorts are excellent. From the fabric to the fit to some of the smaller innovative features, MEC has essentially reinvented itself in the running category. I’ve even started wearing this gear to cross-fit where the ability to move freely and quickly is essential.
